Do you provide a programming help on PHP and MySql?
No, we do not provide help on php programming or MySql usage.
We only provide php and MySql as TOOLS fpr your sites. You may
use those tools or not, it's up to you.
If I create account but do not use it for some period time,
is it ok?
Inactive accounts are automatically deleted by our system after
one-two weeks of inactivity.
FTP
and File uploading
What
is FTP?
FTP
is File Transfer Protocol, an internet protocol (actually, it's
a type of program you use to add or delete content to your website)
used to transfer materials over the Internet. It is very fast,
very efficient, and very reliable.
What
does "Unlimited FTP Site Updates" mean?
You
have access to your site via FTP over the Internet 24 hours a
day, 7 days a week. You can "upload" files to your site - in other
words, transfer files from your computer to our server on the
Internet - and you can also "download" files from your site -
in other words, transfer files from your site on the Cool Free Host webserver, to your computer.
How can I upload my files? Do you have File Manager for HTTP
uploads?
We do not have File Manager. You have to use FTP client to upload
your files. First, get the best FTP program on the Internet, which
in our humble opinion is CuteFTP. You can download it at: www.cuteftp.com
After it's installed, run the program (double click on the yellow
icon), and then click Add Folder - this is where you will store
your FTP site info. Then click Add Site. In the panel that comes
up, enter a name - call it anything you want this is just an alias
for your future connection. Then in Host Address, put your host
name, which we have send you in the initial e-mail. In User ID,
put your User ID - this usually starts with 'acc', for example
acc34567, you will find it in the same e-mail. Finally, you type
your password in the box Password, please type your password carefully,
it will be masked, so you won't be able to read it - this password
is CASE SENSITIVE!
Now click OK in the lower left of the panel, and you will see
your domain name in the right hand panel - highlight it and click
Connect - lower right part of panel. If all goes well, the program
will establish an FTP connection with your site and take you to
the home directory. This is the right place to put your index.html
file and your other web files.
How
do I "upload" and "download" files using CuteFTP?
CuteFTP
is VERY easy to use, and has a very intuitive, easy to use interface.
The lower left panel is YOUR COMPUTER - the lower right panel
is THE REMOTE SITE - in this instance, your Cool Free Host ftp
site. Everything is drop and drag - to upload, drag the appropriate
file from the left panel to the right panel. To download a file
on the remote server, simply reverse the process - drag the file
on the remote server - lower right hand panel - over to the lower
left panel. Easy!
Where
do I put the index.html file?
When
CuteFTP opens your home directory, it initally goes to the right
directory. This is the place to put your index.html. Make sure
you do NOT put the file into one of the folders you have created,
put it in your main directory.
Why
can't I connect to my site via FTP?
Please be sure to use your URL (without "http://" portion)
as the host name for ftp access. Let's say, your URL
is support.coolfreehost.com. This means that you have
to use "support.coolfreehost.com" as the host name for
your FTP client
I'm behind the firewall and can't access my site via FTP
Simply set "passive transfer" at your FTP client settings.
What
does "updating the site" mean?
Basically
what a webmaster does is download files from a website, operate
on them and/or change them with an HTML editor such as Macromedia
Dreamweaver, and the upload the changed file back to the site.
What
is HTML, and what is an HTML editor?
HTML
is HyperText Markup Language - it is essentially a kind of typesetting
language, and is used to create images on the web. Our recommended
editor - for creating and manipulating these images - is Macromedia
Dreamweaver. Another good editor is a freeware and can be
downloaded at: www.arachnoid.com. Read the Help file, practice
a while, and you'll pick it up in no time.
Do
you offer training or help in HTML and the Internet programming?
Nope.
We recommend you go to http://www.ask.com and ask "Where can I
learn HTML?" Or you can do what I did and go to Wal Mart and buy
"HTML For Dummies!".
Web

Why my URL does not work. It is written that index.html is
not uploaded.
You have to upload the INITIAL FILE in your home directory. This
file is generally named index.html, and it is the first web page
that a visiter will see when they first enter your site. If someone
was to type in your site's address, the first page they see will
be "index.html". Please be sure to upload it!
Do
you support Microsoft Frontpage?
Unfortunately,
our servers do not support the Microsoft Frontpage HTML Editor
and Publisher.
Domain
name hosting
I do not have my own domain name. How do I get one?
It's
very easy - you just apply for one. If you want the USA 'com'
'org' or 'net' extension, go to this web address to check and
see if the name you want is available: www.networksolutions.com
They will take your application online, and you can generally
begin using the name within a few hours. Give them these name
servers:

Network Solutions will send you an invoice for $70 which covers
the first two years. We will setup it on our servers for free.

to setup your new domain on our host.
I have my own domain name. Can I use it for my account at coolfreehost.com?
What should I do to setup it?
First of all, before you start setting up your domain name at
our server, YOU HAVE TO UPLOAD YOUR SITE FIRST. We
will not setup your domain without seeing your site.
Domain name setup needs two steps to be done, first by you and
second by us.
1. Step one - you have to contact
the company which had registered your domain name in order to
change DNS in their database. Usually this is done by filling
in a special modification form that is located on their site.
Please change Primary and Secondary DNS fields for ours:

Step two consist of changing our server records and will be done

your subdomain address (example: madonna.coolfreehost.com)
your domain name (example: madonna.com)
We will do the rest and your domain name will be fully functional,
i.e, for example, the domain name madonna.com will point to the
account madonna.coolfreehost.com.

I'm trying to insert the string <php? $myvar="hello"; echo
$myvar; ? > in my html file. Why it doesn't work?
Please rename your .html file file into file with .phtml extention
and everything will work correctly.
MySQL
Support
I
signed up with Cool Free Host. Is my own MySql database created
automatically? If not, how to create it?
First of all, before you apply for MySql at our server, YOU
HAVE TO UPLOAD YOUR SITE FIRST. We will
not setup it without seeing your site.
MySql database is NOT created automatically for you because not
all of our webmasters need it. To create your own database please
contact mysql@coolfreehost.com
and provide us with your account number that you receive from
us for FTP login and your current password for FTP. We will configure
MySql and notify you when ready by e-mail.
I have my MySql database installed now but which host should I
use in my php program to connect to it?
To connect your MySql please use "localhost" as
a database server

How
can I password-protect one of my directories?
To
create a protected area within your website please do the following:
1.
Create the directory with the name starting with the word "protected"
(examples: protected1, protectedcontent etc)
2. Inside of this directory
should be a file named "_passwords". It should be uploaded in
ASCII MODE and should contain
username:password
username:password
Don't forget to put ENTER at the end of each line. Also
please note that passwords should be "AS IS", NON-ENCRIPTED.
Also, please give it the permission 644 (rw-r-r).
After
you do this, your password protection will to work. Hotlinking
is automatically blocked on our servers by a special software.
Surfers should not be able to hotlink your images.
Security
Why
I can not run functions mail() and phpinfo()
For security reasons those functione are disabled. Please do not
use them in your PHP programs.
Why I can not show pictures located at coolfreehost from html
pages located at other domains?
There is a special protection against hotlinkers. This will
allow us to provide more valuable service for you because it prevents
bandwidth theft and your site runs much faster for surfers.
Advertising
Because of your consoles we are not accepted on some site with
link trading sites, can we use banners instead of consoles?
Well, put it this way: with banners like the ones most free hosts
are using, you lose about 30-40% of your best traffic! That means
that not only you will have 40% less clicks on your own banners,
but it also means that the quality of the traffic that's left
for you will be 2-3 times worst than the quality of the traffic
sent to the banners imposed by the "free" hosting service. This
happens because only the newbies (or those who are most likely
to subscribe to a site, since they don't know yet that they can
get FREE porn on the net with not subscriptions) click on those
banners. So in reality you don't lose 40%, you lose about 85%
of your BEST traffic, leaving you with crap traffic (ratios 1/2500-1/3500)
and no money. Is this what you want? So, do you want to go through
that, or lose no traffic at all because our consoles are always
in the background and the surfer will only see them after leaving
you site? The choice is clear: consoles of course, this is why
we decided not to provide banner services, they are a waste of
time and a waste of money for you.
